Hello!

If you want maternity photos that look completely different from every other outdoor session you’ve seen, downtown Austin might be exactly what you’re looking for. Instead of golden grasses and wooded trails, you get stunning architecture, ivy-covered walls, leading lines, and that unmistakable Austin energy. It’s one of my favorite locations for clients who want something bold and editorial — and the variety you can get in a single session is genuinely impressive.
Downtown Austin is big, and you can’t cover all of it in one session — trust me, I’ve tried. Over the years I’ve landed on a few areas that give the most variety without turning your maternity session into a 5K walk.

The Austin Central Library is one of the most architecturally stunning buildings in the city, and the surrounding area is full of incredible shot opportunities — ivy-covered walls, clean modern lines, beautiful landscaping, and interesting textures everywhere you look. I love starting sessions here.

Just a short walk from the library, the old Seaholm Power Plant area is one of my absolute favorite urban backdrops in Austin. The industrial architecture, the scale of the building, and the mix of old and new create images that look completely unlike anything you’d get at a park. The walking distance between the library and Seaholm is very manageable, which is important when you’re navigating a session at 32 weeks.

For a completely different look, we can head toward 2nd Street and down toward Lady Bird Lake — what some of us old-timers still call Town Lake. 😄 This area gives you more of the classic Austin streetscape feel with beautiful green spaces as you get closer to the water.

This location is incredibly versatile but the architectural backdrops tend to look especially stunning with:
Basically, go for something a little more dramatic than you might choose for a park session — downtown can handle it. If you want to borrow something from my wardrobe collection, check out the client closet here.

I always believe in giving you the full picture, so here’s what to know:
It’s busy. 2nd Street and the Lady Bird Lake trail areas especially — there are always people around. Runners, cyclists, tourists, locals enjoying the city. The good news: I can remove people in editing, so this is much less of an issue than it might seem. I’ve gotten beautiful, clean images in the middle of a busy downtown evening.
The homeless population. I want to be honest about this because it’s part of the downtown Austin reality. While the area around the library has improved significantly, you will see some folks experiencing homelessness in the downtown area. I’ve been shooting downtown for years and in all that time the moments have been… memorable, let’s say, but never unsafe. If it doesn’t feel right, we’ll simply move on.
Parking — I usually have clients park near the Austin Central Library and we work our way from there. Paid parking is available in the area.

Downtown Austin is perfect if you:
It’s probably not the right fit if you’re envisioning soft wildflowers and golden grasses — for that, Balcones Canyonlands or Twin Creeks would be a better match.

If the city is calling your name, I’d love to photograph you there. View my maternity photography portfolio here or contact me to check availability.
