Congratulations, mama. Whether you’re expecting your first baby or this isn’t your first rodeo, you’re likely thinking about how you want to capture those early days. And if you’re reading this, you’re probably considering hiring a professional newborn photographer in the Austin area.
Smart move. Because those sleepy, squishy newborn photos? They don’t just happen. They require skill, safety training, and someone who knows how to work with a brand-new human.
So how do you know who to trust with your baby?
Let’s break down the 9 most important questions to ask when you’re choosing a newborn photographer.
There’s no official certification required to photograph newborns, which means literally anyone with a camera can say they’re a newborn photographer. That’s a problem—because newborn safety is not optional.
Ask how many babies they’ve photographed, whether they’ve had hands-on training, and how they ensure baby safety during sessions.
My answer: I’ve completed dozens of online workshops and in-person trainings, including a private two-day mentorship with Kristen Mackey of Son Kissed Photography—one of the best in the business. I’ve photographed hundreds of newborns over the last 10+ years, and your baby’s safety is always my #1 priority.
More isn’t better. You want a photographer who isn’t burned out and rushing you through your session.
At Hello Photography, I only take 1–2 newborns a week. That low-volume model means you get fast replies, individualized care, and a photographer who’s actually available when you need her.

If someone’s photographing babies in their living room or constantly moving locations, that’s a red flag. You want a clean, dedicated space that’s baby-safe and fully stocked.
I have a private, newborn-only studio in my home, sanitized between every session. Blankets, props, wraps—everything is washed, wiped down, and safe for your baby. And if I’m even slightly under the weather, I reschedule. Period.
This one’s not just about professionalism—it’s about protection. If something were to happen, you want to know your photographer is insured and operating above board.
Hello Photography is a registered LLC and fully insured. I don’t cut corners, and I don’t work with anyone who does.
The newborn days are already a blur. You shouldn’t be left guessing what to bring or how to prepare.
Every Hello Photography client gets a detailed prep guide—what to wear for family photos, what to pack in your diaper bag, how to get baby ready before you leave the house. No guesswork, just confidence.
Some photographers don’t include family images. Others only offer baby-only sessions.
You’ll choose the session type that works for you. Want sweet, simple baby-only images? Great. Want to include parents and siblings? I’ve got a family posing package ready to go. The choice is yours.

Your photographer should always let you know what you need for your session. For me, first and foremost, you’ll need your baby! I have tons of buckets, bowls, backdrops, hats, bonnets, headbands, wraps, and more. Forgot the diapers? No problem, I’ve got you covered. I want to make this as easy as possible for you.
Of course, if there is a special item or blanket you’d like to incorporate in some way you are more than welcome to bring that along.
You shouldn’t walk in blind. A posed newborn session is nothing like a mini session at the mall.
My sessions run about 3 hours with a structured workflow designed to keep baby calm and cozy. We take breaks when baby needs to feed, and we do parent photos towards the end of the session so if you need time to apply makeup or fix your hair, you won’t have to worry if you had to rush out the door. Feel free to nap, scroll, or sip a coffee while I create magic.
You’ll get to watch the process if you’d like—and yes, you’ll probably see me get peed or pooped on at least once. Occupational hazard.
There’s a difference between photographers who take pictures of babies and photographers who specialize in newborn photography. That difference matters.
Newborn posing requires real skill and experience. Babies need to be kept warm, calm, and properly supported. No shortcuts.
At Hello Photography Austin, every pose is safe, intentional, and baby-led. I’ve worked with hundreds of newborns, and I know how to read cues and keep your little one comfortable at every stage.
Posed newborn photography, when done right, is safe, beautiful, and deeply rewarding. Your baby won’t stay this tiny for long, and these photos are going to mean everything to you down the line.
If you’re looking for a newborn photographer in Austin who knows her craft, puts safety first, and makes the whole process feel easy—you’re in the right place.
