It’s hard to resist a newborn photo. Rosy cheeks. Silky skin. Curled toes and fingers. Sleepy eyes. Of course, most parents look for unique newborn photo ideas to try and make their kiddos stand out. The fact is — most themes have been done before. Like pink for girls and blue for boys, some tend to be overdone. But even if a theme has been done before (or is typically overdone), there are ways to make it your own!
If you love these cute, unique newborn photo ideas but want a calm, guided experience with a trusted, newborn safety-trained photographer, I’d love to photograph your baby in my Austin-area studio.
Here are some ways to make your newborn photos cute and unique.

My clients are honestly wonderful. So many of them think up beautiful ways to include their family heirlooms in their newborn’s photos. Including heirlooms can take even the most basic, one-color photoshoots and make them unique. Snapping a shot in a parent’s baby clothes can be one great way to do this, but the heirlooms don’t necessarily have to be blankets or clothing. Some of the intergenerational pieces my clients have incorporated in past sessions include:
Essentially, if it’s meaningful to you, I can usually find a way to work it into your newborn photos.

We love a color theme for photos. They tie everything together.
I really enjoy incorporating meaningful color into my sessions when it comes to baby photos. You might opt to include your favorite color or one of your parents’ favorite colors. Or, you might enjoy including seasonal colors in your baby’s photos.
Or, try to think about your newborn’s personality. What fits them?
Are they sweet as can be? Try a lavender. Do they have a little bit of sass? Oranges and yellows are fun. Do they seem like an old soul? Try a teal or green. Play with it and use this as a way to bond with your baby.

While we’re on the color subject, I encourage parents to “think beyond the pink” when taking photos of their baby.
It can be easy to default to classic baby color schemes, especially since most parents have that one parent or friend who gifts them only traditionally-colored items (even if you ask them not to). But of all the themes out there, this one is one of the most overdone. And unfortunately, it can be super cringey as an adult to look back at your baby photos and see yourself drowned in a sea of blue or a blanket of pinks if that’s not who you grow into.
If you want a pink or blue session, there are still ways to make the sessions unique without falling into stereotypes. Create flat lays with blue backgrounds representing the sky. Stick with white onesies and take photos of your little girl surrounded by pink flowers. There are endless possibilities that don’t require blue-lined sailor suits or frilly pink dresses.

If you’re a family of animal lovers, there are several ways to include fuzzy loved ones and animal themes into baby photos.
I’ve done a lot of photos with family pets, and as long as they are well-trained and behaved, I have no problem having them in the studio. But if you don’t have a pet but still want to include an animal theme, that’s not a problem. I’ve got lots of cute little woodland creature outfits at the studio, and you’re welcome to bring your own. Incorporating stuffed animals as props is another excellent way to incorporate animals.
I typically don’t do newborn hospital photos, but for some, it’s a great way to bond with your baby and remember the moments you first met them. A hospital newborn photographer captures babies at the moment of their birth and directly afterward. They’ll take photos of the first time mom sees her baby, mom and her partner interacting with the baby, and the baby at its tiniest!

The most important thing to remember about taking unique newborn photos (or any photos, for that matter!) is to remember that it is all about the people involved. Taking shots of you holding your baby’s hand, their head on your shoulder, or them in your arms will often be the photos you remember the most.

The best newborn photo ideas are simple, baby-led, and focused on connection—think soft neutral wraps, natural textures, meaningful heirlooms, and close-up details like tiny fingers and lashes. Timeless newborn photos don’t rely on trendy props; they highlight your baby (and your family) in a clean, beautiful way.
For the classic sleepy, curled-up newborn look, I recommend photographing babies between 5–21 days old. If your baby is older (or arrives early/late), don’t stress—there are still gorgeous options, and I’ll guide you through what will photograph best for your baby’s stage.
Yes. I’m an Austin-area newborn photographer and photograph newborn sessions in my studio. If you’re in Austin, Leander, Cedar Park, Round Rock, Lakeway, or nearby, you’re in the right place.
Most of the time, less is more. A simple diaper + wrap photographs beautifully. I provide studio styling options (wraps, textures, and simple pieces) and will help you choose what works best for your baby’s comfort and the look you want.
Absolutely. Some of the most meaningful newborn photos are the ones that include you—hands holding baby, baby on your shoulder, siblings snuggling in close. If you want family images included, we’ll plan the session flow so it stays calm and baby-led.
Often, yes—if your pet is calm and well-behaved. Safety and comfort come first, and I’ll walk you through how we include pets in a way that feels relaxed (and still looks polished).
Not at all. Unique newborn photos can come from meaningful details: heirloom blankets, a favorite color palette, a special stuffed animal, or a simple setup with beautiful light. Props should support the story—not distract from your baby.
That’s completely normal. Newborn sessions are designed to be baby-led, with time for feeding, soothing, and breaks. Some babies sleep the whole time, some are wide awake, and both can create beautiful, emotional images. Read more about how I keep your baby safe and supported during a session.
Most newborn sessions take 2–4 hours, depending on the session type and your baby’s needs. The goal is a calm pace, not rushing.
Newborn photography pricing varies based on what’s included (baby-only vs. family, number of images, products like albums). You can view my current newborn pricing here: Austin Newborn Photography Pricing
The easiest way is to reach out with your due date and a few details about what you’re hoping for. I’ll help you choose the best session type and reserve your spot.
