Maternity Photoshoot Accessory Prep | Pro Tips

Picture this. It’s almost time for your maternity photoshoot.

You have an idea of what you want your photos to look like, you’ve booked your photographer, you’ve booked your date, and it all feels like a weight off your shoulders. But then you get to the big day, and your anxiety starts kicking into gear. Getting ready for a maternity photoshoot shouldn’t be stressful — but there are some things to keep in mind before you head into your session.

The biggest thing to remember? Don’t panic! Your maternity photographer will be your guide through your maternity photoshoot journey.

What You Should Bring

I always let my clients know what (if anything) I’ll need from them before their photoshoot. I would hope that every photographer does the same! Clients shouldn’t have to supply their own props or maternity gowns if they don’t want to, but there are a few things I recommend bringing for comfort’s sake.

  • A water bottle, decaf coffee or tea, or any other beverage you might want to stay hydrated. Maternity sessions aren’t super long, but they can involve periods of standing and walking, which aren’t always the easiest when you’re eight months pregnant! Keeping hydrated and warm can make a difference in your comfort level.
  • Underwear & bras that work well with your maternity gown picks. If you’re bringing your own maternity dress, make sure to try it on beforehand and check for any see-through spots. My clients also have the option of choosing a maternity gown from my client closet. In that case, you can coordinate with me beforehand to pick underwear that works with your choice.
  • Accessories, like earrings or rings, you would like to wear with your maternity dress. Adding a little sparkle or glam to a maternity dress can make your photos stand out.
  • Special props. Like Baby Leo’s mom and Baby Reid’s parents, I’ve had many clients bring their unique props to the photoshoot. These props make a beautiful story later on down the line, but they aren’t 100% necessary! I’ve got plenty of clothes and props available.

What Will Already Be At Your Professional Maternity Photoshoot

I always like to emphasize with my clients that their photoshoot is supposed to be as fun to shoot as it is to look at photos afterward (hopefully more fun!)

Because of that, I try to make the process as easy as possible. I’ll be there with bells on, sporting my professional maternity photography equipment. This includes any requested props and lighting, indoor seating, and staging equipment for indoor sessions.

Clients should not need to bring anything other than themselves, some snacks and drinks (if they want), and the family members that will be included in the session.

Tips For Feeling Fabulous At Your Maternity Photoshoot

The key to any good photo is confidence. It doesn’t matter how much you spend on your outfit, your hair, or your photographer — if you’re not feeling like a million bucks, it can show!

And that’s a crying shame. I can’t think of a single client who hasn’t been just absolutely gorgeous during the photoshoot itself. I try to showcase that in my photos, and my hope for all my clients is they see themselves as beautiful before, during, and after the photoshoot.

If you’re worried about your confidence during the photoshoot, you might:

  • Consider getting a manicure, hair trim or style, and facial before the photoshoot. The people looking at your photos afterward might not notice these things, but they can make a difference in the way you feel about yourself.
  • Bring a “hype” person who can help maneuver props and tell you how great you look. Nothing boosts confidence, like a friend or loved one shouting at you from the sidelines about how beautiful you look.
  • Pick a gown you know you’ll feel comfortable in. Sometimes to look their best, clients pick a dress or a gown that isn’t comfortable or something they’d normally wear. Making sure the gown fits, is a style that you like, and something that feels good can impact how you feel during the shoot.
  • Pick a setting that amplifies your personality. Your photographer will ask you about where you’d like to do your maternity photo shoot, and it’s okay to pick whatever setting feels best to you! If you want a field of flowers, your photographer will make it happen. If you want a downtown Austin maternity photomontage, that can happen, too. Your photographer’s job is to showcase you in all your motherly glory — and that means taking photos in a place that makes you feel comfortable.

Trust Your Photographer

Finally, trust your photographer.

They will work with you on making you feel your best, but sometimes that calls for a leap of faith.

Your photographer knows what they are doing, and will do everything in their power to capture this precious moment in your motherhood journey.
