Ever see a stunning maternity photo? One that makes the photo’s subject look like they’re the ruler of their own realm? A lot goes into making a shot like that, including a lot of work from the photographer. But one of the elements that go into a fantastic maternity photo is perfect maternity gowns. I encourage my clients to look through my client closet before choosing because I have an entire closet full of dresses, skirts, fabrics, and accessories at their disposal. Actually, it’s 2 closets, but who’s counting? Some clients feel more comfortable buying their maternity gowns. There are some excellent ways to pin down the right maternity outfit for you, whatever the choice.
Anyone who has bought a wedding dress before knows the importance of budgeting. Your dream dress may be thousands of dollars, but will you feel amazing in it if you spend all your time thinking about how much it cost?
Before buying a maternity gown, set a budget and stick with it. This will ensure you feel comfortable before, during, and after your photoshoot. Believe it or not, anxiety can ruin photos! Most maternity photographers (myself included) have a wide range of maternity gowns available as an inclusive part of the maternity package. But if you’re looking for a new maternity outfit, a reasonable amount to pay for something well-made would be between $100-$1000. Etsy has a great range of unique, custom-sized gowns in this price range.
Another great way to get budget gowns is to buy second-hand. Many high-end maternity photo gowns look practically brand-new when you buy them because they aren’t always used more than once. Sites like ThredUp are an excellent place to start for a wide variety of gently-used gowns, dresses, and more — many of which are designer brands and/or vintage.
Next, consider a color theme to round out your maternity photoshoot. This should be something that stands out to you. For instance, I had a former client include purple in her photos because it was her late mom’s favorite color. Some other things that might sway your decision:
Maternity photos are a special event, so, naturally, most people getting maternity photos done want to spruce up their wardrobe. But it’s also essential to feel comfortable when taking your photos. That comfort goes the extra mile in making people glow in their photos.
So, when considering a maternity gown, think about the limits of your comfort before buying the dress. If you don’t like wearing strapless dresses, consider buying a dress with sleeves. Opt for a full-coverage maternity gown that clings to your curves if you’re on edge about showing too much of your skin at an outdoor shoot. And don’t be afraid to try things on beforehand. When you find the right dress for you, you’ll know it.
Finally, don’t be afraid to think outside the box to include things that make you feel special. Do you love flowers? I can work with a flower-print dress. Play D&D casually? Let’s make that whimsical fairy princess theme happen. Totally obsessed with The Dropout? No problem, I can make you look like a chic CEO in a maternity gown. You bring your ideas, and we’ll make it work. Your maternity gown doesn’t have to be a limit — it should be an opportunity.
