Maternity and newborn sessions are so important. I’m continually talking about how special it is to have the time you spent building your little family well-documented. You’ll look back at the memories of telling everyone your good news, looking at your little one’s tiny feet, and thinking back to what life was like before the addition of your little one with an indescribable type of nostalgia. But documenting your family’s journey shouldn’t stop there! I’ve recently been showcasing the joy of the first birthday milestone session. Sophia’s first birthday milestone was such a cute, tender session. I hope it gives you an idea of what kind of photos you can get from a milestone session in my studio!

It was a big day in the studio for this little one, whose newborn photos I did a while back. Mom, dad, Sophia, and Sophia’s grandma all came into my little studio to celebrate.

Sophia loved hanging out with Grandma! This picture of her and Sophia is so sweet. Grandma is contemplative, holding her new family member, while Sophia smiles with those bright eyes shining.

Sophia got quite a lot of attention from us all in the studio. It’s no wonder, look at how cute she is!

Plus, she’s the star of the show. Mom, dad, and Grandma were so excited to celebrate her first birthday with her.

With a very specific type of milestone photo (IYKYK!), I always make sure to photograph families first. Everyone’s shirts and dresses are clean and crisp, and there’s nothing messy on anyone… yet!

Little Sophia was a darling to work with. She loved hanging out with her mom and dad so much! This photo where she is holding mom and dad’s hands is way too cute.

You never get tired of holding your little one’s hands, even as they grow bigger into yours.

After we took photos with the family, it was time for Sophia to shine. We did a few of her in front of this floral garland, and she was so into it!

Sophia has these gorgeous, dark, expressive eyes that I just love. She was really just such a photogenic baby!

And look at this pure joy! She knew exactly what was coming her way, and I was all about it. The giggles in the room were one of the highlights of my day.

Cake smash time! Cake smashes get messy, but it’s worth it. The babies (usually) love it (I mean, what baby doesn’t love getting super messy?) and it sure does look cute. Miss Sophia had her choice of cakes to smash at this session!

Sophia never really got super messy, but she did enjoy dipping her fingers in the frosting. She knew what she wanted, and she didn’t need to smash a cake to get there. The little details from her “cake smash” are really cute and highlight her personality. She was willing to get her hands dirty (peep the little frosting on her finger), but she didn’t have to go ham to get the job done. Composure, composure, composure!

Sophia was a joy to have in the studio — so full of life, smiley, and adorable. I can’t wait to show you more of the little ones I’ve had in my studio since she had her session!
