New Mom Tip | Dealing With Breastfeeding Issues

Breastfeeding is so many things all at once. Anyone who has breastfed can tell you that lactating is hard, and getting baby to latch can be harder. It’s especially difficult when you’re dealing with the pain of mastitis, swelling, chaffing, and bites — and it is equally as painful when you want to breastfeed but the baby just won’t. But breastfeeding can also be an amazing experience in bonding, whether you’re feeling super connected watching your baby nurse from you, or you’re feeling empowered knowing that you’re providing for your baby just by holding a bottle of formula to their lips. Here is a new mom tip or two for all you nursing moms out there.

New Mom Tip #1: Get started ASAP & Stick With It

If you’re planning to breastfeed your baby, the best time to get started is pretty soon after birth! Newborns have very small stomachs, so it is ok if they don’t feed for long. But breastfeeding early on gets your newborn used to it, and may even promote easier breastfeeding down the line. Stick with breastfeeding as long as you are able to those first few days, and get a feel for your baby’s routine, needs, and nursing style.

Posture can make a difference.

Believe it or not, how baby is positioned on you can really make a difference in how they feed. Babies tend to prefer being positioned with their belly on yours, their feet touching something (like your arm), and when you point your nipple at their nose to encourage them to open wide and latch on. It doesn’t sound like a lot, but when you’re in the moment, it can feel like a tricky bit of choreography.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, that is totally normal. It may be helpful to watch other moms nurse. Local La Leche League groups, or other breastfeeding support groups, can help.

Posture can make a difference for you, too.

One of the biggest issues breastfeeding moms face is painful breasts related to engorgement, mastitis, and even the way their babies feed. Posturing yourself while nursing, moving, and sleeping can be helpful at taking the pressure of your breasts. A nursing stool may help while you are actually nursing. While you sleep, make sure you avoid sleeping on your breasts by using a nursing pillow for support. A little support can go a long way when it comes to preventing breast discomfort.

Be kind to your nipples.

Babies aren’t always the nicest to the nipples. They can’t help it, but that doesn’t help you. Add that to clogged milk ducts and all the other associated breastfeeding pains, and breastfeeding can truly feel awful.

Some things to keep on hand for the painful days:

  • Lanolin-based ointment, like Bag Balm
  • Cold compresses
  • OTC painkillers

But if you experience extended pain issues, reach out to a lactation expert to see if your baby might need help with their latch, which can cause pain.

The Final New Mom Breastfeeding Tip: Ask for help when you need it

Look — breastfeeding is absolutely one of the hardest parts of new parenthood. Sleeplessness aside, a little new human is depending upon you for survival. When that survival hurts, or when your baby does not breastfeed easily, you can feel like you’re a failure.

I promise you’re not, and there is help out there. A trusted doctor, local lactation groups, lactation experts, and even friends or family who have gone through it before are all there to help you. Reaching out is worth it, and you’re super strong for doing it for your baby and your own health.

Best of luck to you, new mamas! Whether you breastfeed for months or turn to formula, you know best, and your baby thanks you for it.
