Brushy Creek Sports Park: One of My Favorite Cedar Park Maternity Photo Locations

If you’ve been researching outdoor maternity photo locations in the Cedar Park and Austin area, chances are Brushy Creek Sports Park has come up, and for good reason. It’s one of my most-used locations for Cedar Park maternity photography, and after photographing dozens of sessions there, I can tell you exactly what makes it great, what to watch out for, and how to get the most out of your time there.

Where Is Brushy Creek Sports Park?

Brushy Creek Sports Park is located in Cedar Park, Texas, just off Brushy Creek Road. It’s one of several parks that runs along Brushy Creek in the area, and it’s easy to get to from Cedar Park, Leander, Round Rock, and Austin.

Why I Love This Location for Maternity Photos

The biggest thing this park has going for it is variety. Without walking very far from the parking area, we can hit completely different looks in a single session, which is great if you want a mix of images that don’t all feel the same.

Some of my favorite spots within the park:

  • The railroad bridge with the creek in front. This is my absolute favorite spot at Brushy Creek. The bridge gives you that classic, timeless backdrop and the creek in front reflects the light beautifully. Whether we shoot it at sunrise or during golden hour at sunset, the images from this spot are consistently stunning.
  • The walking bridge. Great for a different architectural element and a beautiful view down the creek.
  • The wooded areas. Open, shaded spots that work beautifully for a softer, more intimate feel.
  • The creek itself. When the water levels are right, getting close to the water adds a beautiful natural element to your gallery.

The Best Time to Shoot at Brushy Creek

Honestly? Early morning is the move. I know, nobody wants to hear that when they’re pregnant and exhausted. But I promise it’s worth it. Jordan and Robbie’s sunrise session is the best example of what that light does. Here’s why it works:

  • The morning light is soft, warm, and absolutely gorgeous
  • The park is significantly less crowded (more on that in a second)
  • You have access to all the best spots without waiting for other photographers or park-goers
  • It’s cooler, which if you’ve ever been pregnant in a Texas summer, you know is not a small thing

Evening golden hour sessions are also beautiful here. The light through the trees is dreamy and the railroad bridge at sunset is one of my favorite shots anywhere in the Austin area.

What to Wear at Brushy Creek

Because of the variety of backdrops at this location, almost any style works here. I’ve shot flowy formal gowns, fitted dresses, and casual boho looks and they’ve all photographed beautifully. If you’re unsure, a flowy gown tends to photograph especially well near the water and bridge areas.

If you need outfit inspiration or want to borrow something from my client closet, I have maternity gowns available for your session. check out the client closet here.

Is Brushy Creek Good Year Round?

Yes, with a few caveats.

Spring and summer are beautiful. The greenery is lush, wildflowers sometimes pop up along the trail, and the creek tends to have good water levels. Just be prepared for Texas heat.

Fall is gorgeous for colors but comes with a catch. It gets very crowded. Fall sports season means the parking lots fill up fast, there are events happening on weekends, and you’ll share the trails with a lot of other photographers who had the same idea. If you want a fall session here, morning or a weekday evening is your best bet.

Winter works well too. The light is lower in the sky which actually creates beautiful warm tones even outside of traditional golden hour.

One thing to know year round: if there’s been heavy rains, the creek may have flooded. I’ll check conditions before your session and have backup location options ready if needed.

The Honest Cons

I believe in giving you the full picture, cons included. Here’s what to know going in:

  • It gets crowded. This is a popular park for sports, runners, dog walkers, families, and yes, a lot of other photographers. You won’t have the place to yourself, especially on weekends or during fall sports season.
  • The disc golf course runs through parts of the park. We’ll work around it, but just know it’s there.
  • Creek access depends on recent rainfall. Too much rain and it floods. I’ll always check before your session.
