Balcones Canyonlands: My Absolute Favorite Maternity Photo Location Near Austin

I’ll just say it: Balcones Canyonlands is my favorite maternity photography location in the entire Austin area. I know, I know — every photographer has a favorite and mine just happens to be a bird sanctuary about 45 minutes outside of the city (30 minutes from my studio). But once you see the photos, you’ll understand completely.

Where Is Balcones Canyonlands?

Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge is located near Bertram, Texas. There are several entrances to the refuge, and for maternity sessions I always use the Bertram entrance — it gives you access to the rolling hills, tall golden grasses, and sweeping open landscape that makes this place so special. It’s worth the drive. I promise.

Why I Love This Location for Maternity Photos

Where do I start? The tall grasses alone are worth the trip. They move beautifully in the wind, they catch the light in a way that nothing else does, and they create this naturally dreamy, ethereal look in photos that my clients absolutely love.

Here’s what makes Balcones so special:

  • The tall grasses — These are the signature look of Balcones and honestly one of my favorite things to photograph anywhere. Flowy dresses in the wind against those golden grasses? Magical every single time.
  • The rolling hills — The landscape here is expansive and beautiful. You’re not tucked into a small park — you’re out in wide-open Texas hill country.
  • The light — Because it’s so open, you get incredible light for both morning and evening sessions. The golden hour here is absolutely stunning.
  • The quiet — This is a wildlife refuge, not a public park with sports fields and dog walkers. It’s peaceful, unhurried, and you can actually focus on the session without navigating around other people.
  • The accessibility — It’s a pretty short, easy walk from the parking area to the best shooting spots, which is a big deal when you’re pregnant!

The Best Time to Shoot at Balcones Canyonlands

Honestly — any time of year. This is one of the few locations I can say that about without any caveats.

Spring brings wildflowers and lush greenery. If you can time your session when the wildflowers are blooming, the photos are absolutely breathtaking — think purple and yellow wildflowers against golden grasses with that soft Texas sky behind you.

Summer is warm (obviously — this is Texas), so we’ll schedule for early morning or evening to avoid the heat. The grasses are tall and golden and gorgeous.

Fall is beautiful. The colors shift, the light gets warmer, and it never gets overcrowded the way some other Austin-area locations do. This is a huge bonus.

Winter works beautifully too. The lower sun angle creates gorgeous warm light even outside of traditional golden hour.

Morning and evening sessions both work well here — I genuinely love the light at both times of day at this location.

What to Wear at Balcones Canyonlands

Flowy dresses are absolutely the move here. The wind at Balcones is part of the magic — it catches fabric and creates movement in your photos that looks effortless and stunning. A long, flowy gown in a soft or earthy tone photographs beautifully against the golden grasses.

That said, I’ve also done fitted looks and casual sessions here that turned out beautifully. The landscape is so stunning that it works as a backdrop for almost any style.

If you need outfit inspiration or want to borrow something from my wardrobe collection, I have maternity gowns available for your session — check out the client closet here.

One practical note: most of my clients change into their session outfits at the location rather than driving out in their gown. There is a bathroom on site, which is convenient — more on that below.

The Honest Truth About Balcones

You know I’m always going to give you the full picture. Here’s what to know:

  • It’s a bird sanctuary, which means NO DOGS. I know, I know — you wanted to include your fur baby. Balcones is a no-pets location, no exceptions. If having your dog in your maternity session is important to you, we’ll choose a different location.
  • The bathroom situation. There is a bathroom on site, which is great in theory. I will tell you that I personally encountered a scorpion in there once, so… just something to be aware of. Most of my clients opt to change at their car and use the facilities before leaving home. You’ve been warned. 🦂
  • It’s a longer drive. Balcones is about 45 minutes outside of Austin. I always think it’s worth it, but plan accordingly — especially if you’re doing an early morning session.
  • The creek is usually dry. There is a creek at Balcones, but it’s further into the refuge and typically doesn’t have much water. We won’t be shooting near water here — the grasses and open landscape are the star of the show.
