Ah, the ever-loved cake smash. It’s a favorite among those looking to remember their child’s first birthday in a creative way. But since it’s that time of year, I wanted to look back at some fall photoshoots that might help parents think about baby costume ideas. This one is a personal favorite of mine! Where the Wild Things Are is a beloved child’s tale, and things certainly got wild during this session!
I first met this beautiful, blue-eyed babe when he was about 6 months old and attended one of my Valentine’s Day mini sessions. I was so excited when his momma asked me to do cake smash photos for his 1-year milestone session. She wanted a Where the Wild Things Are theme and had even gotten him a Max costume. There’s nothing cuter than that! Planning this session was exciting enough. But actually seeing him in the costume? Well, my heart momma heart absolutely melted!
Before we get down to the cake photos, I always get some photos of just the birthday baby by themselves. Turning ONE is a pretty important milestone and I really want to capture a lot of fun photos of your baby.
Oh my goodness, he was as cute as can be! I loved that shot of him leaning on the stool and you can see the little tail behind him!
Those baby blues really just draw you right in, don’t they?
We got him changed out of his Max costume so he could really dig into that cake. While I wanted to capture him at his most crittery self, I didn’t want to ruin that cute as could be costume.
And you can see why below!
Over the years I’ve noticed that babies either seem to love the cake or they hate it. Both reactions are pretty amazing. I think it’s safe to say that Everett LOVED this cake! He was just so excited to have it all over his hands and he kept cheering himself on! He was so proud. And we were proud of him, too!
When I look back on my photos, I can safely say that this was a successful one. It’s also a great example of how brainstorming baby costume ideas before setting up a photo session can make a great thing even better.
This session was a blast. The little faces he made and how he raised his arms and squealed made my day back then, and still make it today! I loved every single moment.
