I’ll just say it: Balcones Canyonlands is my favorite maternity photography location in the entire Austin area. I know, I know — every photographer has a favorite and mine just happens to be a bird sanctuary about 45 minutes outside of the city (30 minutes from my studio). But once you see the photos, you’ll understand completely.
Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge is located near Bertram, Texas. There are several entrances to the refuge, and for maternity sessions I always use the Bertram entrance — it gives you access to the rolling hills, tall golden grasses, and sweeping open landscape that makes this place so special. It’s worth the drive. I promise.

Where do I start? The tall grasses alone are worth the trip. They move beautifully in the wind, they catch the light in a way that nothing else does, and they create this naturally dreamy, ethereal look in photos that my clients absolutely love.
Here’s what makes Balcones so special:
Honestly — any time of year. This is one of the few locations I can say that about without any caveats.
Spring brings wildflowers and lush greenery. If you can time your session when the wildflowers are blooming, the photos are absolutely breathtaking — think purple and yellow wildflowers against golden grasses with that soft Texas sky behind you.
Summer is warm (obviously — this is Texas), so we’ll schedule for early morning or evening to avoid the heat. The grasses are tall and golden and gorgeous.
Fall is beautiful. The colors shift, the light gets warmer, and it never gets overcrowded the way some other Austin-area locations do. This is a huge bonus.
Winter works beautifully too. The lower sun angle creates gorgeous warm light even outside of traditional golden hour.
Morning and evening sessions both work well here — I genuinely love the light at both times of day at this location.

Flowy dresses are absolutely the move here. The wind at Balcones is part of the magic — it catches fabric and creates movement in your photos that looks effortless and stunning. A long, flowy gown in a soft or earthy tone photographs beautifully against the golden grasses.
That said, I’ve also done fitted looks and casual sessions here that turned out beautifully. The landscape is so stunning that it works as a backdrop for almost any style.
If you need outfit inspiration or want to borrow something from my wardrobe collection, I have maternity gowns available for your session — check out the client closet here.
One practical note: most of my clients change into their session outfits at the location rather than driving out in their gown. There is a bathroom on site, which is convenient — more on that below.

You know I’m always going to give you the full picture. Here’s what to know:

If Balcones sounds like your vibe — and trust me, once you see the photos it will — I’d love to photograph you there. You can view my maternity photography portfolio here or contact me to check availability.
