It’s often hard to get twin newborn photos for my portfolio. After all, twins are unique! But recently, the Hello Photography studio was graced with Jules and Julienne and their moms Kate and Dani! These two bundles of love were born a little early, to everyone’s surprise, which meant we were dealing with some very teeny, very precious little faces on set that day. I am so excited to share this adorable photo session with you.
Meet these little cuties, born at 4lbs. 12oz. (Jules) and 5lbs 6oz (Julienne) when they came Earthside a little early.
We started out taking photos of the two babies without their moms, both separately and together. Twin siblings often share a special bond when they are older, so I think it’s really important to capture that bond from birth.
Dani and Kate were awesome about letting me take some creative lead on the sessions. Other than some suggestions on color themes, they really gave me the reins throughout, and I tried to do right by them. But it’s hard to catch a bad angle with these two little cuties — in black and white or in color!
With some creative licensing, you know that I had to use one of my favorite props — my mini wooden bed!
I had several methods for distinguishing between Jules and Julienne throughout the photoshoot. As they get older, it will obviously be easier to tell themselves apart in photos. But for now, both of them so small and so young, we included different props.
For the ones taken on the prop bed, I circled Julienne with daisies and she wore a headband. Meanwhile, for Jules’ photos, he was propped on the bed surrounded by eucalyptus laurels.
For simpler sets, we differentiated between the two with color schemes and wardrobe. Julienne got to wear lighter peach and soft white headbands on this soft, white background.
For Jules, we stuck with simpler blue blankets — classic baby boy photo imagery!
And we made sure to get a lot of different angles, as you can see from that close up above, and photos in both black and white for both of the twins.
I also want to give little miss Julienne a hand for these shots! Her moms thought she was going to give us trouble on the day of the set, but she was sleepy the whole time. That made it a lot easier to take solo shots of her.
I tried to get a few shots of them wrapped together, and much to our surprise, Jules was the one who gave us the most grief!
We tried to pose him naked in this shot above, but it didn’t happen. And that’s ok! Babies don’t always like the studio, and who can blame them? I still try and capture their best sides every time.
After taking glamor shots for the stars of the show, I wanted to make sure I made Julienne and Jules’ moms feel included in the process! They were such a cute family.
The family photos were mostly simple, done in front of a plain background with an emphasis on lighting and texture. Simple details allowed the black and white photos in this series to really shine.
I also incorporated some dramatic lighting into the photos, as well.
I was able to take a few photos with just Dani or Kate holding just one of the twins. When they grow up, I think these photos will be particularly important for them.
While twins often share an inseparable bond with one another, it isn’t always easy for them to feel like they get individual attention from their parents (If you grew up with a lot of siblings you likely know the feeling!) These photos show what all parents know to be true — each of their children is uniquely special to them.
I once again want to thank Dani and Kate for bringing in their little bundles of joy for double-the-fun twin newborn photos. Wishing them all the best!
