I picked my son, Deacon, up from school one day after a long weekend with his dad. There he was, in the school cafeteria in a t-shirt and khaki shorts with a fresh new haircut and another missing tooth. I swear he had grown 2 inches since I last saw him 5 days earlier and I couldn’t believe my eyes. Who was this sweet young man that ran up to me giving me a hug while saying, “Mommy, I’ve missed you!” I wanted to capture this very moment because I knew that something else about him would change in the next week or so.
Photography truly allows us to freeze a moment in time. After all, those photos never change even though the people in them do. So naturally I did what every photographer mom would do- we ran home and grabbed my camera and went and did a spur of the moment photo session. Plus, I needed some new photos of him to add to my yearly Christmas present for the grandmas, which is a calendar filled with photos from the previous year.
Our photo session was different this time. He didn’t whine or make weird faces (which I actually adore, btw). He told me where he should stand to take the photos and actually posed himself and I was totally there for it. He LOVED it and I was shocked. I feel like we are finally past the days where I have to bribe him with donuts and ice cream and he understands now why we are doing these sessions. “Because you love them, Mommy” and he is absolutely correct. I freaking LOVE them and it allows me to hold onto him being little for just a while longer.
I will tell you that he did make a special request for McDonald’s on the way home and I happily obliged.
