School photos are kicking into full gear as the summer winds down and the Austin area starts the back-to-school bustle. Austin baby photography, however, happens year-round in my Cedar Park photography studio.
Baby Evelyn’s session was last minute, and despite my week being full of back-to-school photos, I was able to squeeze her session in. I was glad I did, too! She was a cutie, and I got to use my favorite color to create a soft, dreamy newborn session.
Austin Baby Photography | Meet Baby Evelyn
Evelyn was the sweet subject of this newborn session. At just 16 days old, she was still tiny enough to fit into all of my favorite newborn photography props. To boot, she was a perfect sleeper throughout the session.
Having a sleepy baby might not mean much to someone who doesn’t do newborn photography (or someone who’s never had a baby), but it is essential when it comes to getting the perfect newborn photo.
There are some tricks to getting little ones to get and stay sleepy during the session. Usually, I’ll ask mom or dad to feed baby while I set up. That way, their tummies are full and they’re ready for a nap. I also make sure to have some soft music available, and I make sure to schedule plenty of snuggle time before, during, and after the session.
After all, a happy baby takes the best pictures — and it’s clear from these photos that Evelyn was a happy baby.
I couldn’t resist taking some photos of her in this little bear wrap, as well as the requested purple theme. I could not have been more excited about how easy she was to pose during the photo session, and it gave me a lot to work with on the props end.
Baby-Only Newborn Session
Not all newborn photo sessions are baby only, but Evelyn’s was. It really depends upon the parents’ preference. Some parents want shots with them holding their baby to mark the occasion. Others want to just focus on this brief moment in time when their baby is super tiny and precious.
I don’t have a preference one way or the other. I love being able to include families in newborn photos if that’s their choice. That gives me room to play around with lighting and setting, which is fun. Solo babies are also a joy to photograph. It gives me leeway to create a story that parents and their children alike can look back on as they get older.
Purple Baby!
Evelyn’s folks were easy to please during this newborn session. I mentioned that they requested that the photo session include some purple, and I was pleased as punch to work with my favorite color. The lavenders and deep royal purples included in her photos really complimented her complexion and gave this session a serene feel.
I also had a ton of different textures within my purple props and settings to work with. This flower headband went perfectly with the waffle-stitch blanket Evelyn is resting on in these photos. To mix up the texture in those photos, I also included a white lace-accented, baby-sized throw pillow. Pictures with the pillow and the flower headband gave me serious fairy princess vibes.
I made sure to also use a smooth-textured background, as well, to mix up textures throughout the session. I got several beautiful shots of Evelyn using this smooth lavender blanket, but this one above has to be one of my favorites. (Plus, the way she’s holding this baby-sized teddy bear is a sight to behold).
