Austin maternity photography has a lot of perks. You’ve got great views, fun clients, and perfect outdoor locations. But one of my favorite things about Austin-area photography? So many of my clients opt for less traditional themes in their maternity portraits.
Ashley’s maternity portraits were a case in point. Dogs can be best friends during pregnancy, looking out for their moms throughout. So, it’s interesting to me why they aren’t in more maternity pictures. As well as including Ashley’s partner, Brian, their pup Barton made an appearance in this photoshoot in Brushy Creek Sports Park.
The more family, the merrier! Barton was well-behaved the whole time and managed to add to their family portrait without stealing the entire show. Ashley looked beautiful. I can’t help but think that when she looks back on these unique maternity photos, she’ll feel extra blessed.
Taking maternity photography with a dog requires a little bit of coordination, making it easier if they’re done outside. Like me, Ashley is from Connecticut, so she was eager to get outdoors for her maternity portraits. I had tons of summer maternity photo ideas, and Brushy Creek Sports Park in Cedar Park (nearby Austin) was my first choice for maternity shoots for Ashley, Brian, and Barton.
Located close to Cedar Park, Austin, and several surrounding towns, Brushy Creek Sports Park is a great central location for maternity photo meetups. Despite its name, Brushy Creek Sports Park also provides unique spots for outdoor maternity photography. There are ample spots for great shots in and around the woods, the creek, and along the trails. Even with sports equipment nearby, it’s easy to look at these photos and think they were taken somewhere excluded from other people.
Plus, Barton loved it.
I do a lot of photography at Brushy Creek. Family photos and maternity photos especially work out well, because the natural beauty of Texas really shines through in these settings. This time was really special. I haven’t really seen anything before it or since.
Right before Ashley’s photoshoot, there was a lot of rain. I mean way more than even is typical for the rainy season here in Texas. Because of that, Brushy Creek Sports Park was in full greenery and bloom. The lush, emerald background in many of these photos made it perfect for shots like the one below, where Ashley was wearing this white maternity gown. It brought out her beautiful baby bump, and you can tell she was enjoying herself.
And she wasn’t the only one enjoying the magic– Brian loved that big tree in the woods featured in so many of these shots. So, we made sure to include him in a few portraits.
Is it wrong that I almost couldn’t believe I was in Texas when I took these photos? Especially as the weather gets hotter and hotter, Texas starts looking a little drier and desert-like. Grass dries up and yellows, trees conserve their energy by hanging on to their leaves, and creek beds run dry. It makes for a super beautiful, almost cowboy movie-like setting, but not usually a setting this green.
If there was one aspect of Ashley’s Austin maternity photography session that brought Texas back into the conversation, it was the wildflowers. They were everywhere, and I managed to get several stunning shots of Ashley cradling her baby bump and glowing among the flowers. The photo above was one of my favorites. It encapsulated everything I love about maternity photos. They’re visual reminders of the sweet new life that’s about to come into this world. They’re also a tribute to mothers — their courage, resiliency, and beauty throughout their nine months of pregnancy.
I say that was one of my favorites, but it was tough to choose a favorite from this set. Ashley, Brian, and Barton look so happy together in all of these shots. I’m sure they’ll continue to be happy as Barton gains a “sibling” and Ashley and Brian gain a child.

Right now is the perfect time to book school photos and fall family portraits. Family photos and senior photos taken at Brushy Creek Sports Park often have gorgeous composition, drastic lighting, and often more character than studio portraits. I’m ready to make your family photo dreams a reality this fall at Brushy Creek, my own Cedar Park studio, or anywhere around Austin.
