A newborn photo session is usually done within the first few weeks of infancy, when babies are still fresh and new to this world, but also sleepy and easy to work with in poses. But that doesn’t mean that older newborn photos are impossible to take! Baby Ryker is the perfect example of a wonderful newborn session taken outside of the first few weeks! These newborn portraits came out so well, and I was so glad to capture these perfect moments in the Hello Photography studio.
Ryker’s Newborn Photo Session
Meet Dawn, Mark, and their son – Ryker! Ryker was 11 weeks old at the time of this newborn session. This little trooper had to have heart surgery shortly after he was born, which is why we did his session later than normal. At 12 pounds the day of the photo shoot, baby Ryker was an amazing little man!
We started Ryker’s session with some solo shots in the wrapped position. The smooth background and light textures of the blanket bring out Ryker’s angelic features. In this photo, Ryker’s heart surgery scar is still slightly visible. I wanted to pay homage to the strength of this family and this tiny little human without sensationalizing baby Ryker’s struggle. My hope was these newborn photos could be a reminder of what they’ve overcome and the beautiful, beautiful baby that made it through such big adversity at such a young age.
We took several other adorable solo photos with Ryker. These of him on one of my little prop beds were a favorite from the session. His snuggly little pose and his chubby cheeks are too much!
We also did some solo poses in one of my prop buckets. Ryker was such a great sport during this solo newborn photo session.
Family Time With Baby Ryker!
After his solo session, Ryker was looking for a some mom-and-dad time! So, we transitioned into family shots with Dawn and Mark. They’re such a stunning family, I wanted to honor them with a range of black and white, color, just mom and just dad photos.
Both Dawn and Mark dressed in black, which made it easy to pair different set pieces and baby outfits with them. We started with a few poses together with Ryker — both standing and aerial. I love how serene they both look in these photos.
Up next were Dawn’s solo photos. She looks like a natural here with Ryker, loving and cradling him. We went for a neutral palette with these photos, putting Ryker in a light beige against a cream-colored background. We also made sure to do a few solo aerial photos, and I just love how beautiful Dawn’s hair looks in these photos.
Then on to Mark! We took this series of photos with baby Ryker standing up. Mark was so sweet during this series of photos. It’s clear how much he loves being a dad from these photos. And baby Ryker was here for the snuggles! With both Dawn and Mark, Ryker settled in and took some of the cutest photos all snuggled up with his loved ones.
